Elevate your bookshelf with these stunning bookends by resident artist Liisa Nelson - a delicious cluster of pale pink, blue, red, beige, and gold luster atop a light blue base.

Referencing science, math, religion, anthropology, and art history, Liisa Nelson's work enacts ambiguity and mystery, pointing to the infinities within each person and each moment. Nelson describes her work as emotionally driven and led by a poetic, nuanced curiosity that is expressed through material fascination.

To satisfy the bookworms in our midst, this lot includes a Director-led tour for up to 12 at The Rosenbach! There are plenty of tours to choose from, whatever piques your literary interest! Tour options include:

Nobel Prize Winners from the Collection

The Nobel Prize for Literature is arguably the most important literary prize a writer can receive for their full body of work. The Rosenbach Museum & Library is home to the work of more than a handful of Nobel laureates, and in this BTB, we'll examine three: Toni Morrison (1993), William Faulkner (1949), and William Butler Yeats (1923). These three writers couldn't be more different from one another, and yet the Rosenbach has collected all three. Get up close to manuscripts, typescripts, and first editions written by these lauded authors, and learn more about their lives, what inspired their creativity, and how, when, and why they all came to be here at the Rosenbach.

Behind the Bookcase: Hands-on Tours at The Rosenbach

Behind the Bookcase: Hands-on Tours offer unparalleled access to see, and even touch, rare and important items not usually on view to the public. Each program is dedicated to a different author, theme, or topic and grants a truly hands-on experience with materials in The Rosenbach's inspiring collection.

Founding Fathers and Revolutionary Woman

From George Washington's earliest known letter (he was just 17!) to a meticulously folded page containing a scientific observation made by Thomas Jefferson while he was walking outside on a misty day, this tour offers an intimate view of the Founding Fathers' writings to family, friends, colleagues, and even themselves. It is a rare opportunity to know our nation's icons as real people: fathers, spurned lovers, jealous politicians, intellectuals, and, of course, revolutionaries. Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and Franklin form the core of the tour.

Kelsey Scouten Bates is the John C. Haas Director of The Rosenbach - a native of Maryland; Bates spent ten years in Alabama, where she conducted a rhetorical analysis of the Gee's Bend interviews housed in the Birmingham Public Library Department of Archives & Manuscripts. Kelsey is a student of writing, and rhetoric-she earned her M.S. at Towson University in Baltimore-and American History-she earned her B.A. at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is currently working on a creative non-fiction writing project that combines her own family history and the history of the Appalachian Mountains.
