Shortly after earning her MFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, ANGE ALTENHOFEN was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition that could eventually lead to permanent blindness. This diagnosis forced her to rethink her creative practice, and she began to create work that relied on physical interaction and the sense of touch to communicate meaning. This resulted in the Braille Series, an ongoing body of sculptural work that incorporates braille text, represented by beads and gemstones, onto various materials and forms, and she continues to explore tactility and interaction in her work. After recently relocating to Iowa, Altenhofen was selected as an Iowa Artist Fellow in 2019 by the Iowa Arts Council and the NEA, and received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant and a Rauschenberg Foundation Grant in 2021. Her interactive sculptures were featured in a solo performative exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center in 2022.
