STEVE JOY is a mixed media artist living in Omaha, NE who works primarily with oil paint, Japanese ink gold foil, silver foil, and shellac on paper and fiberglass. He is represented by Gallery 72 in Omaha and Gallery Storrer in Zurich, Switzerland. His work includes the somewhat romantic idea that the exotic and mysterious places can be contained within painting-giving us all a taste of the unknown without having to make the journey ourselves. Joy is committed to the idea of spiritual abstraction and the development of painting and its history from the 15th century to today. Influences of his include Duccio, Giotto, Velasquez, and Matisse. Joy's work is featured internationally including collections at the Bergen Art Museum (Norway); Sheldon Art Museum (Lincoln, NE); Sioux City Art Center (Sioux City, IA); Drammens Art Museum (Norway); Trondheim Art Museum (Norway); British Council Arts (London); Japan Foundation (Tokyo); Joslyn Art Museum (Omaha, NE); Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain); and the New York Public Library (New York, NY). He was a curator at Bemis from 1998 to 1999. He received a BFA from the Exeter College of Art in England, an MFA in Painting from Chelsea College of Arts in London and an MFA from Kyoto University of Arts in Japan.
