Guillemot Kayaks was created by Nick Schade in 1993 to share the kayak designs he created for his own use.

Nick grew up around canoes and kayaks. After beginning a career as an engineer for the US Navy, he knew he wanted to get back on the water himself. In 1986 he decided to design and build a kayak using a technique he had seen used to create canoes: the "strip-built" method.

A development of the original Guillemot line, the Night Heron family of kayaks are the result of Nick Schade's ventures into rougher paddling conditions. The Night Heron family differs from traditional Inuit designs by maintaining a full waterline shape out to the ends instead of the "pinched" ends that are characteristic of the skin-on-frame kayaks made by the Greenlanders. The fuller ends create a long, effective waterline giving the Night Heron great efficiency at high speeds.

This kayak was built by Arthur Lima, a Mystic Seaport boat builder, on May 14, 2008 and has never been in the water. Measures 18 feet in length.
