Kathy McCullen is a mixed-media painter whose work approaches a wide range of subject
matter from still life and landscapes to personal narratives. Her paintings are expressive with a
strong use of color and materiality. Kathy marries the best of both worlds with her passion for
figurative art and her skill in abstraction.

When asked about her process, Kathy says, " My process begins with gestural marks and
strokes of my palette knife and gradually becomes more thoughtful, as I work and rework the
media. Each painting is tie intensive and dense, as translucent and opaque layers of pigment
permit images to gradually appear. Composition emerges from the build-up and excavation of
media and the constant engagement of the conceptual with expressionistic results in a
synthesis of emotion and experience. I work in a perpetual state of exploration and discovery,
and my materials range from acrylic and oil paint to charcoal, ink, and collage, Because I am
self-taught painter, growth and learning are vital to me, and the very challenges I encounter
allow me to push beyond subject matter and work more expressively."
