Ceramic (terra cotta) with glazes, underglazes and oxides

11' x 11" x 5.5"

I grew up in a small town in the Mississippi Delta in the 1960's, an area which has been described as "the most southern place on earth" because of its unique racial and cultural history. On one hand, the rural south was idyllic and pastoral with pristine woods and bodies of water to explore. On the other hand, it was also a time rife with racism, overt homophobia and the ubiquitous hand of Christianity. These conditions and experiences contributed greatly to my role as an artist and to the themes that I explore in my work. My education includes an undergraduate degree in English and French and a master's degree in Instructional Design. While working full-time after graduation, I studied drawing and painting at Georgia State for several years. I also studied ceramics at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta for many years and have attended numerous ceramics workshops and conferences. My residencies include The Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Montana, and The Hambidge Creative Residency Program in Georgia. I was also a visiting artist at the University of Georgia Ceramics Department. My most recent artist residencies include 10 weeks at Gaya Ceramics Arts Center in Bali, Indonesia in 2019 and 2 ½ months at Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark in 2022. I currently have work in galleries in St. Louis, Nashville, Helena (MT), and have frequently shown my work at various juried exhibitions throughout the US. In Atlanta, my work has been exhibited at {Poem88}, Swan Coach House Gallery, Cat Eye Creative, The Signature Gallery, and The Seen Gallery.
