Artist: Harriet Hope, Dutch Harbor
Harriet Hope, an Aleut Unungan, made this framed fan in 1998 out of cotton fuzz, beach pea flowers, and tiny shells. She was a child living in Dutch Harbor during the Japanese attack on June 3, 1942. Following the bombing, she was taken to Burnett Inlet where she spent four years in an internment camp. World War II was a defining point in Alaskan history that demonstrates the resilience of Alaska's native people.
