An Atlanta native, W. Chester Old studied ceramics and printmaking at Penland School of Craft. After his studies, Old founded a ceramic design studio and began exhibiting his work throughout the eastern United States. He received a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art (SCAD) while incorporating video, sound, light, and unusual materials into his installations and sculptures. Awards include Southwest Arts Center commission for eight light sculptures in the theater (Atlanta); artist-in-residence/exhibition at SECCA (Winston-Salem, NC), sponsored by National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation; and purchase for Truman Hall, residence of The United States Ambassador to NATO (Brussels, Belgium). Old's current work examines conceptual ideas he experimented with during his undergraduate studies. The results are his Dysfunctional Objects (included in the MOCA GA permanent collection), the Shadow Portraits series, and most recently his Book as Object series.
