The name 'Wingback Chair" came from the chair wing shaped curvature on the back. The wings were added to provide support for the head and the neck of the person sitting in it. They also provided a place for a person to rest their arms, which gave a distinctive look--a shape similar to that of a birds wing. The Wingback chair was invented in the 17th century by Thomas Chippendale, a famous English furniture designer. Chippendale was known for his elaborate designs and ornate wood carving. This unique rocker with a caned back has been restained and restored in black and the seat has been reupholstered.
