Lynn Goldsmith: "Patti Smith," New York, 1975
Portrait of Patti Smith in New York City during a 1975 protest against the Shah of Iran. Photographer Goldsmith was nearby when she heard the sound of the protests. She asked Smith, with whom she has a close relationship, to join her on the scene. Smith arrived wearing a hand-painted "Free Keith" T-shirt, a reference to the guitarist and co-founder of The Rolling Stones who was arrested on drug charges in 1967. Goldsmith asked the protesters to wear their masks so as not to cause any trouble for them and their families. For Goldsmith, the image is a reminder "that we are not alone in our desire for freedom."
Lynn Goldsmith (American, b. 1948)
Lynn Goldsmith is best known for her photographs of music personalities. Her prints have been collected by the Smithsonian, The National Portrait Gallery, MOMA, and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Her photographs have appeared in numerous publications, including Life, Newsweek, Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and People. Goldsmith was the youngest woman member of the Directors Guild of America and directed the first rock show on network television. She wrote, produced, and performed on the album "Dancing for Mental Health," which featured Sting, Steve Winwood and Todd Rundgren. The album won critical acclaim and Goldsmith's single "Kissing With Confidence" reached #3 on the British charts. Goldsmith founded the first photo agency focused on celebrity portraiture. In a recent high-profile legal battle with the Warhol Foundation, the Supreme Court ruled in Goldsmith's favor, protecting the intellectual property of visual artists.
