Artist Statement:

We all have turning points in our lives -- some are cataclysmic. But I believe that the persistent, more powerful triggers are those that are slow, unforgettable images, sometimes rising out of nowhere, that quietly give us a heartfelt thump. Words are not needed, but touches, smells, soft sounds, and even tastes lend to the very intimate and secret thoughts that we hold close inside. These moments are the perfect companionship and fulfillment - a very pure form of love and loveliness - for whatever voids we need or want to fill. Although faceted, these "ordinary" and "frequent" thoughts and memories are what I try to capture in my art.

Years ago, my closest friend introduced me to The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and the mantra proposed by the novel's protagonist, Prince Lev Nikolyaevich Myshkin, that the world will be saved by beauty. Since then, I have tried to instill the concepts of commonality and community into all that I do and share with others, hoping to build relationships.

Specifically in my art, l grab memories of myriad faces, times, change agentry, and habitat to create a composite vision of my world ("il mondo") and then place the white outlined images as cutouts on a painted background of a specific place and time.

I paint daily (usually listening to Bach) if even just to refine details in the story that I am trying to tell. There is a sense of immediacy in the storytelling because the story is not derived from photographs or staging. And because of this, I rely on the adaptable and flexible qualities of acrylics.
