About the Artist:
My name is Gabriel Ucci, I'm a multi-disciplinary artist with a focus in photography, currently working, studying, and residing in New York City. I consider myself a genre- less photographer - I find that classification is usually restrictive. If required to create a label for my work, I'd call it documentary, fine art, or auto-biographical photography.
Though I spend most of my time in New York, I often travel for the purpose of pho- tography. As an artist who works best through natural inspiration rather than the inherent need to work - there's no better direct inspiration than being in a new city for the first time; most of my favorite work was created inEurope. I create my photos almost exclusively with my two film cameras; analog film has been my focus since late 2019.
My latest projects are rooted in the exploration of place and the relationships closest to myself. In the last two years, I've developed a working method that involves spending considerable time with my images before publishing. In short, my process usually involves: medium format film to the lab, and then scans back to me. I'll create prints at home - experimenting with different sizes, printing on both photo and drawing paper, and printing in different color tones. Then, my prints are placed into my scanner, and I'm back where I started - left with a digital file to eventually share and publish. Even if this process does not produce a significantly different visual result than simply sharing the original scan from the lab, the process gives me time and space to experience and deeply understand my photographs.
