About the Artist:

Stephen began painting in 2017. He works in acrylics and limits himself to white, black, red, blue, & yellow. The canvas is primed. The primary colors are then mixed on top of that in a random fashion. Finally black is used to form an image in last layer. This process mimics the scratch art he used to do with crayons as a child.

Stephen has always been fascinated and influenced by the works of Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, John Byrne, Ramona Fradon, Robert McGinnis, MC Escher, Piet Mondrian, Dorothea Lange, Thomas Nast, Dalia Messick, Ozzie Sweet, Warhol, Osvaldos Salas and a host of others. Any one of these artists can create an image that is easily recognizable, grand, and can be challenging to The Viewer.

Stephen believes that one of the purposes of art is to challenge Artist and Viewer. In limiting his pallet, Stephen is challenged to create an image that The Viewer can recognize and connect with. The Viewer has to look at each piece with their eyes, their mind, and their heart. The Viewer should allow themselves to perceive the colors that may or may not be there. The Viewer should ponder the features that are included as well as those that are excluded. Stephen, as an artist, hopes that this will allow the Viewer to find the most important thing in any piece of art. A moment of awe and wonder.
