About the Artist:

Olivia "ORB" Beelby is an artist (for life) and illustrator (for money) from Southeast Michigan, currently based in the Detroit area. They are fascinated by the ability to conjure illusions from marks on a surface and have been experimenting with this possibility ever since their kindergarten declaration that they would grow up to be an artist. Currently their artwork is heavily inspired by their time spent with young children, both the fantasy stories they weave and the ways they utilize media to illustrate them.

Additional Information:

This image was initially created as a submission for the Detroit River Coalition's show held in the aquarium of Belle Isle. Just a few weeks before submissions opened for the show, local news reported that beavers had recently re-inhabited the island for the first time in decades and that the DNR had killed several of them in an effort to keep the island manageable as a public space. I created this piece to imagine a future in which we are not at odds with the beaver, nor the wetlands, nor ourselves and instead live peacefully in Detroit with all its indigenous wildlife and communities embracing the ecological nature of this place, and recognizing humanity's roles both positive and negative. It is irregularly shaped and as such is not within my budget to frame currently.
