Artist Statement:
I, Abhijeet Shrivastava, or Abhi, was born in the city of Jabalpur in central India. From an early age, I discovered a profound passion for expressing my thoughts and observations through charcoal drawings on paper. Charcoal, a natural and environmentally friendly art material, has a rich history as it was once used to create cave drawings around the globe. However, in today's world, this ancient method of drawing is slowly fading away, replaced by harmful chemical substances that emit higher levels of carbon. Through my work, I am dedicated to preserving this historic art form and advancing sustainable arts.
As a self-taught artist, I have cultivated a style that harmoniously balances environmental consciousness and visual serenity. My artwork has garnered recognition through publications and exhibitions in galleries across the globe. Currently, I am based in New York City, where I work as a Climate Change and Sustainability Consultant. I hold a master's degree in architecture and urban Design from Columbia University, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of design principles. While I am proficient in utilizing computer-aided design tools for my creative work, I hold a deep appreciation for the tactile experience of hand drawings.
Inspired by the urgency of climate change, I find myself compelled to address this critical issue through my artwork. Each piece becomes a visual narrative that urges viewers to confront the environmental challenges we face and take meaningful action. I seek to raise awareness, stimulate dialogue, and inspire positive change by highlighting the delicate balance between humanity and nature.
I have an ongoing exhibition "Mother Nature vs. Human Nature: The Inequity of Climate Resilience", organized by NJ state Council of Arts is the largest exhibition focusing on climate change. Also my artwork will be featured at the Fifth National Climate Assessment by The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), established by Presidential initiative and mandated by Congress in the Global Change Research Act (GCRA).
Through my work, I hope to ignite a sense of reverence for our environment, fostering a collective commitment to safeguarding the Earth for future generations. I invite viewers to join me on this artistic exploration, to pause, reflect, and embark on a journey towards a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence with nature.
Abhijeet Shrivastava, Abhi
