Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism.

Joe Everson has created a more freeing version where the use of pattern is not needed, but color is applied through random drips of paint on canvas to create a subject. It's a modern take that he calls "spontaneous pointillism."
