About the Artist

Born in Habana, Cuba in 1967, Edel Alvarez Galban has always had a fascination with everything artistic. From his infancy he painted everything around him, becoming a threat to all the walls, furniture and electrical devices in his childhood home, no one wanted the child to visit their home for fear he would start "decorating". Elementary teachers noticed very early his interest and artistic talent, but later in adolescence his vocation for medicine tilted the balance to study medicine until he became a doctor.
You will see his signature on his paintings as AGalban. In many Latin American countries children are given a last name with two parts. The first part is the fathers last name followed by the mother's maiden name. In AGalban the "A" is abbreviated for Alvarez and Galban is spelled out as a tribute to his mothers continued support of his artistic talents, while his father was more supportive of his career in medicine.
AGalban practiced sculpture in the school of art Federico Engel in Habana, Cuba in 1993. In 1995 he came to the United States and then joined the Uniteds States Army. After an honorable discharge from the Army he studied for several years until he passed the US medical boards and became licensed as a physician in Florida. Today he has a small private medical practice "Casa Clinic" in Clearwater, FL. Although AGalban is an excellent physician and loved by his patients his passion is painting and many of those paintings decorate the walls of his office and home. AGalban's paintings have been in exhibited in Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico, Florida, Puerto Rico, and New York. The vast part of his work is the result of multimedia including, charcoal, acrylic, oil and ink on canvas and paper. AGalban lives happily in Saint Petersburg, FL with his wife Rebecca and their children Lucia and Lennon.
