Description:
Seeking to create a tiny, shiny, doodle that the viewers closely interact with, I created these Tangle Jams as colorful audio necklaces in 2019. I made them as necklaces for adventurous, playful, and bold people but they can also double as mono audio cables. Available in all colors of the rainbow, their clasp is the familiar audio jack connection as the wire wraps through my improvisational bent tumbleweed of glass tubing. The tubing is coated in silver from the interior to give them their Ritzy sparkle. Exude sparkle and pizzaz by wearing a Tangle Jam necklace!
About the Artist:
"My name is James Akers, and I am an artist currently based in Brooklyn, New York where with my partner, Ali Feeney, we run a neon fabrication company called Nebula Neon. I grew up skateboarding, playing guitar and hacking video games in Maryland before I received a BFA from Alfred University in 2015. I have travelled much more and and my work has been shown in museums, galleries, fairs and houses around the world since then. In my studio practice, I create dense, frenetically active sculptures that often incorporate neon and sound circuits. For me, neon provides the eye grabbing glow of a screen in a three dimensional, shapeable, sculptural, linear glow.
Artistically, I'm interested in themes of celebration and excess, digital surveillance and influence, consumerism, bliss and rebellious subversion. I love messes and I usually employ the "show your work" philosophy when designing and assembling my work."
