This Horseshoe Crab is carved by acclaimed artist Lance Lichtensteiger from reclaimed American Wormy Chestnut and stained to preserve the wood's grain and texture. This particular horseshoe crab has a playful curve to its tail and delightful detailing of its claws, sometimes referred to as "lucky bones" in traditional sailor's jargon.
American Chestnut was easily worked with basic hand tools, so much of this wood ended up as cabins and furniture. Lance sculpts the Chestnut he has reclaimed from old cabins that are set to be demolished. He has been carving and painting from his studios for more than 50 years, often summering in Surf City, NJ.
Horseshoe Crab measures 25" Tall and 16" wide and includes hardware for hanging, or the piece may be displayed on a table.
