Katagami Stencil for Kimono Design (Geometric)

Mulberry Paper (Kozo)

24.5" x 21"

Year Unknown

This katagami stencil exemplifies the intricate craft of traditional Japanese kimono pattern creation. Katagami were used to print detailed designs on fabric, primarily for kimonos and obis. The patterns, often geometric or depicting natural elements, were carefully cut from layers of kozo paper, which had been stiffened with persimmon tannin. This toughened kozo allowed for delicate, precise cut-outs, used to apply various dyes, including the popular indigo, to the fabric. The exact date of this stencil remains undetermined.
