Katagami Stencil for Kimono Design (Floral)
Mulberry Paper (Kozo)
19.5" x 16"
Year Unknown
This katagami stencil, possibly featuring a chrysanthemum motif, showcases the intricate art of kimono pattern creation. Katagami were traditional Japanese stencils used to print elaborate designs on fabric, most commonly for kimonos and obis. The patterns, often geometric or depicting elements from nature, were meticulously cut from stiffened layers of kozo paper. The kozo, toughened with persimmon tannin, allowed for delicate and precise cut-outs, which were then used to apply dyes, including the popular indigo, to the fabric. While the design here echoes the style of Edo Period artist Ogata Korin, the exact date of this stencil remains undetermined.
