Born and raised in North Carolina, Cary Esser first studied ceramics at the Penland School of Crafts. She later earned a BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute (1978) and an MFA at Alfred University (1984). Returning to Chapel Hill, NC for a decade, her practice in ceramics concentrated on tiles, murals, and public art projects. During this time, she taught at Duke University and the University of North Carolina, while also leading workshops nationwide. In 1996 Esser accepted the position of ceramics chair at KCAI.

She received the KCAI Distinguished Achievement Award in 2013. Esser, along with her students and colleagues, was featured in Season Two of the PBS "Craft In America" television series.
