Travis Pratt, raised in the Midwest, studied Ceramics at The Kansas City Art Institute. His paintings have consistently explored themes of human habitation, with houses as a central motif since his undergraduate days. Early works depicted bright, loose, and surreal houses, often stilted or set in ominous weather, evoking various emotional states-all created from imagination.
After moving to New York in 2010, Pratt shifted his focus to material and conceptual experimentation. However, in 2011, an F5 tornado devastated his hometown of Joplin, Missouri. This event profoundly impacted him, leading him to create a series of paintings based on photographs he took of family homes affected by the storm.
Today, Pratt's work spans tightly rendered paintings from personal experiences to abstractions and imagined portraits, all rooted in drawing. His practice of mark-making is essential to translating his view of the world and preserving his memories.
