2022
Hugh DeWitte, a Kansas City Art Institute graduate, resides in Dallas, Texas, near the High Five Interchange, where his inspiration for his current work began. His art, consisting of drawings and paintings, explores the energy and beauty of "highwayscapes" through long, expressive strokes and primal mark-making. DeWitte's improvisational style captures the flowing lines of modern highways, creating an atmosphere of strength and curiosity.
His work is not about replicating locations but conveying the feelings of exploration, movement, and inner conflict. The roads in his art serve as metaphors for modern life's pulse, capturing the drama and striving of human existence. His drawings feature quick, expressive graphite layers, while his paintings use overlapping oil layers to reflect the spirit of the urban environment. Recently, his work has evolved to include abstract interpretations of circular motion, emphasizing the cyclical nature of urban life and its constant motion.
