Andrew Watel grew up in St. Louis Missouri. He received an undergraduate degree in Painting from San Francisco State University in 1977 and a Master of Fine Art from Yale University in 1983. Upon graduating from Yale, he moved to New York City where he independently pursued painting and teaching. In 1993, as a founding member, he established The Painting Center, an independent non-profit artist run space which remains viable today. From 2004-2017 he taught as an Adjunct Professor of Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design.
In 2018 he moved from New York to Kansas City to pursue painting and teaching full time. In 2022 Mr. Watel was hired as an Adjunct Professor of Painting and Drawing at Johnson County Community College and continues to teach there today. Mr. Watel is currently represented by Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City where he had a solo exhibition in 2022. The show was favorably reviewed by Elisabeth Kirsch in KC Studio Magazine. He has had work in the 2022 and 2024 HR Block Flatfile shows and the 2022 KCAI Auction. His work is included in several private and public Kansas City collections.
