Stephen Da Lay's inspiration to design and build polyhedrons came from his childhood letter and number blocks. For several years, his work has focused on the construction and development of polyhedrons using printmaking. When Stephen first began exploring polyhedrons, he used pre-existing patterns. However, it soon became apparent to him that he needed to create his own designs. He first constructed an object out of cubes, then visually disassembled the piece to produce a pattern of the object on one sheet of paper so it could be reassembled. Stephen has also been drawn to mathematics and how numbers make and predict patterns, including symmetry involving balance. Some of his prints incorporate imagery from the double helix that defines DNA strands. Additionally, he includes famous quotes in his work, coded or made with ciphers, along with plain text to convey his ideas to the viewer.
