96 AFUE VS. 80 AFUE
Besides a higher efficiency rating, there are several important differences between a 96% AFUE and an 80% AFUE. Below are several factors that set a 96 furnace apart.
Heats in stages
Most 80% AFUE furnaces only have one speed and that's full blast. The most efficient furnaces, however, often have two-stage or modulating gas valves. This feature allows you to be more comfortable while using less gas to heat your home.
Variable-speed blower
Your furnace's blower is what distributes warm air throughout the home. The blower motor uses a lot of electricity in the process. Typically, an 80% AFUE furnace only runs on high. A 96% AFUE furnace, however, offers a variable-speed blower. This allows you to provide the same comfort while running at lower speeds.
Noise-reduction technology
Older furnaces can get loud when they start up. In addition to much quieter variable-speed heating, higher-end 96% AFUE furnace features sealed and insulated cabinets to reduce disruptive noises and make home heating nearly silent.
ENERGY STAR rating
Whenever a furnace is ENERGY STAR rated, it's a huge plus. Energy Star helps you save on heating bills. It's also better for the environment. When compared to a baseline model like the 80% AFUE, ENERGY STAR says you can expect to save around $85 per year (or more) on home heating costs.
