These three colorful earthenware figures from Merrie Wright are part of a larger installation called "In Passing." The small, stylized figures have a marbled surface that combines off-white with vivid greens and blues. Their faces, clothes, and hairstyles are sculpted with minimal detail, at one time universal and individual.
"In Passing" was one of many works Wright created for her Master's Thesis at Louisiana State University. The project saw Wright exploring themes of transition as life moves from adolescence into adulthood, "the loss of naivetè, accumulation of experiences and memories, and the release of memory necessary to move on to new experiences…" Solemn without being somber, these pieces exist as a means to project our personal experiences white celebrating a shared humanity.
Merrie Wright received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Louisiana State University. She currently lives in East Texas and is Professor and Chair of the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas at Tyler. Wright exhibits her work nationally, has received numerous exhibition awards for her work, and has been cited in several publications, including Ceramics Monthly.
