Mallory Wetherell - Small Favor
4 in x 4 in x 4 in
A former staff member at The Clay Studio, Mallory Wetherell's work explores gray areas by using emotional associations linked to anatomy. Made from sculpted porcelain with detailed underglaze renderings, this small piece brings to mind the human heart or cellular tissue viewed intimately under a microscope. This graphic, arresting, yet delicate work hangs from a string in the middle of a clear acrylic box in front of a detailed line drawing of flowers. Originally made for our popular Small Favors exhibition, this 4" cube can be easily hung as part of your art collection.
Wetherell has stated that her work is autobiographical, exposing aspects of personal relationships that are not readily apparent. Each piece is a visual depiction of an internalized relationship, both true and fictitious realities, those the artist has with herself or that she shares with those individuals closest to her.
Mallory is originally from South Carolina, where she began her collegiate studies in the sciences with plans to study prosthetic design. While her focus shifted to the arts later in college, her interest in the sciences continues to influence her ceramic artwork. She has served as Gallery Coordinator at The Clay Studio of Philadelphia, and has been an artist-in-residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. She has taught ceramics at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and is currently Associate Professor of Ceramics and Sculpture at University of Nebraska at Kearney.
