Wear a beautiful piece of Earth's history. This Petoskey stone was donated by WonderLab's CFO, Cathy Olmer, and made into wearable art by Ollie McDermott-Sipe, WonderLab's Birthday Party Specialist.

Petoskey stone is polished, fossilized Hexagonaria coral from Michigan. The Hexagonaria coral is a colonial marine animal that lived in warm shallow salt water tropical seas. During the Devonian Period, some 415 million to 355 million years ago, Michigan was much closer to the equator. Much of Michigan's bedrock is made up of huge limestone beds that underlie the surface soil. These large tracts of limestone bedrock are the remains of ancient coral reefs that filled the sea that once covered what is now Michigan.
