Marsha Monroe Pippenger's series, "Redefining Walls" resulted from her church's request for her to design a prayer wall. She chose to evoke the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where people of all cultures come to tuck small written prayers and concerns into its cracks. "Walls, so often seen as divisive, can also gather us in and protect," Pippenger writes. "They support. They bear weight. Walls connect one thing to another. There are even times when the light breaks through the cracks and overcomes the dark."
This 13-by-16-inch collage-on-canvas piece aptly demonstrates Pippenger's mastery "of building and layering, of adding and taking away." It is a delight to the eyes, and even, perhaps, the soul. Donated by Marsha Pippenger
