Beer was long a staple of a monk's diet. In the 16 th century, one monastery brewed a delicious doppelbock that was so good they sent a sample to the pope for his approval before presuming they could fast only on their suds throughout lent.

As the story goes, the beer spoiled on its trip from Germany to Rome and the pope was so repulsed by the taste, he declared these monks to be holy, indeed, if they could fast only on this liquid for their 40 day Lenten journey.

This collection is an unspoiled sample of Trappist perfection. 6 Trappist monasteries are well represented in these 23 bottles. 5 are Belgian, and one French - La Trappe - which was the very first Trappist monastery founded in the 12 th century.

Our holy monks have had centuries of
experience brewing legendary suds as their opus Dei (work of God).

Enjoy these with some friends in a set of 5 La Trappe beer glasses that will forever remind you of the 12 th century founding of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance - The Trappists.
