Appreciate the outdoors and develop a sense of environmental stewardship with the teachers of Lower Elementary. This outdoor package includes 4 hikes for 6 students at Bemis Woods in Western Springs. Winter: Explore frozen bogs, track animal prints, sip hot chocolate, and see the woods during its winter dormancy. Spring: Begin mapping the trail system, observe migratory birds, and identify different plants that can cause allergic reactions. Summer: Observe the undergrowth of the woods where life is most abundant as well as collect, stage, and pin insects. Begin practicing stewardship by picking up litter along the trails, recycling what we can. Finish the day with a barbecue and Frisbee. Fall: Witness the leaves changing color, migratory birds leaving for winter, and appreciate a year in the woods. Four weekend days in 2015 will be arranged according to weather. Appropriate for 6 students, ages 7-12.
