Two drawings of St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral and the Tapis de Fleurs in Brussels. The chapel dedicated to St. Michael was probably built here as early as the 9th century. The relics of St. Gudula were transfered there. It became known as "the collegiale church of St. Michael and St. Gudula". In February 1962, it was given cathedral status, and it has been the seat of the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, together with St. Rombouts cathedral in Mechelen. The Flower Carpet (French: Tapis de fleurs) is a biennial event in Brussels in which volunteers from around Belgium weave a carpet-like tapestry out of colorful begonias. The event takes place every other August, coordinated around Assumption Day. Nearly a million flowers are required to create the ephemeral 19,000 sq. ft. carpet.
