This oil on canvas 20th century Peruvian painting depicts St. Michael the Archangel as a young warrior standing with wings expanded with a sword in his left hand and feather in his right. It is framed in a Baroque style gilt foliate.
This painting originated from the Cuzco School in Peru. The Cuzco School is a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in Cuzco, Peru, that emerged during the Colonial period from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The Spanish influences in Peru inspired new painting techniques - new iconography that combined regional and European traditions. Some characteristics of Cuzco paintings include religious themes and lack of perspective, and they commonly include native flora and fauna. Most of the paintings were created anonymously and were displayed in churches, chapels, and cathedrals.
