Artwork by Tippy McIntosh
Using time of day, light, atmosphere, and music as inspiration for her compositions, McIntosh has ventured onto new surfaces, painting sometimes bold and sometimes impressionistic color on exotic wood veneers. By following the grain of the wood veneer, and using color to highlight the different grain patterns, her compositions make a clear contemporary statement. The veneers are then broken into shapes along natural grain lines, carefully arranged and mounted to add the tension and play of negative space, and finally framed for presentation.
The veneer used in this painting, "Remains of a Fall Day," is Japanese Sen, similar to Ash in the United States. Japanese Sen is a light-colored wood with a fine grain and close growth rings. It sometimes has a dramatic figure to it. Sen grows in the mountainous districts of central Japan. While it is not widely used in the United States, it is a beautiful veneer that reacts very well to the oil paint, keeping the vibrant colors of the paint alive and exciting.
With a BFA from the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati, McIntosh continues to apply her formal education in printmaking and painting to oils, mixed media, drypoints, pen and ink illustration, and encaustics. She is also the beloved grandmother of a Homestead Hawk!
