About the work:

"I began creating this piece on Inauguration Day, 2009. I was moved to capture this significant moment in time as we welcomed our 44th president into office; the first African American President of the United States, Barack Obama. I felt an overwhelming sense of hope and pride in our country. As an artist, I take inspiration from the world around me, and while the primary purpose of the piece was to document this historic event, there is also the humorous irony of Obama being left-handed and a Democrat. Taking that a step further, I played with the boxing analogy "big left" using the gloves as a visual metaphor for the difficulties and battles ahead in his journey as POTUS, and to emphasize what I believe to be the strength of his character." - Ryan Cronin

After a year-and-a-half-long curatorial process, Ryan Cronin's "Obama, Big Left" painting was officially accepted into the permanent art collection of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
