To Hell and Back

Operation Tidal Wave by Anthony Saunders

Flying at low-level over the Astra Romana oil refinery at Ploesti during Operation Tidal Wave, on Sunday, 1 August 1943, Lt. James Merrick powers his B-24 Liberator Lil De-icer through walls of burning debris as time-delayed bombs, dropped in error by an earlier attack, begin to explode beneath him and the others of the 98th Bomb Group. With the element of surprise lost, and taking heavy losses in the process, the 98th bravely continue to hold their course as the roaring tongues of flame and dense smoke erupt around them.
