An exclusive Minneapolis Institute of Art tour for FOUR, with Dr. Andreas Marks, Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese & Korean Art and Director of the Clark Center for Japanese Art.
A private tour of the special exhibition "Bizarre Mountains, Withered Trees: Fukuda Kodojin, Japan's Forgotten Poet and Painter" which will be on view April 22 until July 23, 2023.
Fukuda Kodojin (1865-1944) and a handful of other scholar-artists carried Japan's literati painting tradition (Nanga) into the 20th century. Characteristic for Kodojin's painting style are bizarre mountain formations that often include a recluse, enjoying time in nature. Kodojin was not only a painter but also an accomplished scholar, poet, and calligrapher who was favored by influential industrialists and politicians in his time. Forgotten after his death, he is today highly appreciated outside of Japan, and this is the most comprehensive exhibition of Kodojin ever held.
Tour date during the exhibition period to be discussed later.
