The Health Equity Anti Racism (HEAR) Committee of the PA Affiliate of the ACNM was formed to address racism as the root cause of health inequities in Pennsylvania.
Roughly 90% of midwives currently practicing in the US are white, while 45% of pregnant people cared for by midwives are Black, Indigenous and Latinx.
Racially concordant providers have been shown to improve outcomes, promote quality, and reduce experiences of racial bias in health care.
Our profession was built on the disenfranchisement of non-white midwives.
This scholarship is an opportunity for those who have benefited from generations of systemic racism and white supremacy to participate in a reparation and restoration process.
We propose that anti-racism work within midwifery will restore the numbers of midwives who identify as Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color. We suggest that if you are a white midwife, you naturally benefited from a system that excluded and forced out communities of color. We encourage midwives to consider contributing as sustaining donors at 1-2% of their salary.
