MISSION
The mission of the Urban League of Essex County is to assist African Americans and disadvantaged residents in the achievement of social and economic self-sufficiency. We deliver on our mission through quality programs and services in education, youth development, job readiness, employment assistance, financial education and coaching, housing counseling services, and community building.

HISTORY
For over a century, The League has worked tirelessly to build the small business community, promote social justice and help underserved citizens of Essex County become independent and productive members of their communities. From advocating for African American worker's rights after the Great Depression to the 1967 riots in Newark to this very day, the League has always been on the front lines of the movement for social justice and equity. During the second half of the 20th century, The League began to train urban residents in the "soft skills" of business, successfully placing them in white-collar jobs that had previously been unavailable to blacks at companies such as Prudential Financial and New Jersey Bell Telephone. In the 21st century, The League engages with Essex County residents to ensure their direct needs are being met and they have the resources and skills to succeed in the modern economy. Since becoming President and CEO in 2004, Vivian Cox Fraser has transitioned The League from a social service agency to a comprehensive community development corporation that revitalizes local neighborhoods, supports families, and equips working residents with the financial empowerment opportunities they need to thrive.

2023 & BEYOND, TOGETHER
Our programs are a concrete expression of the ongoing work to build racial equity and celebrate the richness of our diversity. Providing holistic lifespan services to individuals and families with dignity and promoting a change mindset aligns with our aspirational mission: "Empowering Communities. Changing Lives."

From Early Childhood Education to senior jobs training, we are raising the quality of life for all we serve.

WE THANK YOU for being a part of the Urban League mission as well.  Volunteers and donors strengthen our capacity to live this vision through their care and commitment.

106 years on, together let us forge ahead with renewed purpose to build a more just and equitable future.

The race isn't over!
