Bio

Colbert draws on the complexities of the contemporary human spirit. His 2D and 3D artworks engage the audience uniquely, evoking a conscious and unconscious dialogue. Over the past two decades, his narratives have pointedly traced America's checkered history, exposed media's capitalist appetite, decommodified the celebrity, and explored the unabashed dichotomy of pop culture. As a true craftsman, Colbert's message never overshadows his technique. His bold kinetic pieces are characteristically layered with visuals, unexpected textures and thematic content, balancing the playful with the thoughtful. His recent work is evidence of an evolution and maturity. His optical storytelling is more subversive, entrusting his audience with the freedom of interpretation through indirect metaphor and symbolism.

Billy Colbert imparts his knowledge, experience and expertise as an Associate Professor at Delaware State University where he has taught New Media. Receiving an MFA and Presidential Fellowship from the University of Delaware, Colbert recognizes the importance of generational influence and education. Moved by elders, he often lends an intrigued ear to the tales of yesteryear. Admittedly, this is one way he continues to grow.
