About the work

Meadowsweet, also known as Queen of the Meadow, Brideswort, or Meadwort, is a member of the rose family. The name may come from when it was used in the Middle Ages to flavor mead (from Middle English "Medewurte"). Evidence of meadowsweet has been found in Bronze Age burial sites in England and Ireland; it was an important ritual and medicinal herb, mentioned in Chaucer and famous Irish mythological texts. It remains essential to us today: in the mid-nineteenth century salicylic acid was isolated from meadowsweet, leading to the creation of aspirin.

Bio

Daria Panichas makes art because it's a joy, and likes to explore beauty, transformation, stillness and possibility. Through unconventional light, lines and contour, her monochromatic photographs distill natural objects, landscapes and streetscapes into ambiguous forms; freed from the familiar, they morph into new worlds that invite the viewer to explore and wonder, just as she did.
