About the work
This painting is part of a series of paintings inspired by Lisa Yuskavage's color palette, coloring book imagery, and Japanese prints.
I became interested in using staining and scraping to apply color with this work. Patterns starting creeping into the work here.
Bio
Bryan Warner is an artist and educator who lives and works in Southern New Jersey. His work is influenced by Japanese culture, coloring books, nostalgia, fatherhood, and growing up in a multi-racial family. He has shown his art nationally in NYC, Chicago, Texas, California, Florida, and Philadelphia.
My work is influenced by my childhood growing up in a multiracial family during the eighties and nineties in southern New Jersey, and my daily work as an Elementary art teacher. As I paint, I find myself remembering the innocence of childhood wonder, but also the slow revelation of the social complexities inherent to the meeting of cultures. I process these memories by working to create a world of beauty, whimsy, cruelty, and dreams.
