Based on an Iroquois story called "The Stone Coat Woman," that describes giant stone figures who once occupied the forest
competing with human over game animals. One day a hunter's wife meets a Stone Coat Woman, and they both plot to defeat the cruel Stone Coat Men who occupy the woods. Victorious, the Stone Coat Woman gifts a piece of animal skin with various animal hairs. She says that pulling one hair will guarantee a successful hunt that day, and the gift lasted for many years after that. Unframed.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Jeremy Dennis (b. 1990) is a contemporary fine art photographer and a member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. In his work, he explores indigenous identity, assimilation, and tradition.

My photography explores indigenous identity, cultural assimilation, and the ancestral traditional practices of my tribe, the Shinnecock Indian Nation.

Though science has solved many questions about natural phenomena, questions of identity are more abstract, the answers more nuanced. My work is a means of examining my identity and the identity of my community, specifically the unique experience of living on a sovereign Indian reservation and the problems we face.

Digital photography lets me create cinematic images. Nowhere have indigenous people been more poorly misrepresented than in American movies. My images question and disrupt the post-colonial narrative that dominates in film and media and results in damaging stereotypes, such as the "noble savage" depictions in Disney's Pocahontas.

As racial divisions and tensions reach a nationwide fever pitch, it's more important to me than ever to offer a complex and compelling representation of indigenous people. I like making use of the cinema's tools, the same ones directors have always turned against us (curiously familiar representations, clothing that makes a statement, pleasing lighting), to create conversations about uncomfortable aspects of post-colonialism.

Despite four hundred years of colonization, we remain anchored to our land by our ancient stories. The indigenous mythology that influences my photography grants me access to the minds of my ancestors, including the value they placed on our sacred lands. By outfitting and arranging models to depict those myths, I strive to continue my ancestors' tradition of storytelling and showcase the sanctity of our land, elevating its worth beyond a prize for the highest bidder.

This image was created as a visual representation of 2020, giving a nod to Rosie the Riveter. The year was tumultuous between the COVID-19 pandemic and the exposure of systemic racism. This bolstered the Black Lives Matters and Indigenous Lives Matter movements, which gained more momentum by joining forces. Notable incidents in Canada included the Wet'suwet'en conflict and #shutdowncanada protest, threats to the moderate livelihood of Mi'kmaq lobster fishermen, and 1492 Land Back Lane "occupation".

Artist Bio/Statement:
Autumn Whiteway (!Night Singing Woman") is a Saulteaux (Ojibway)/Métis archaeologist, artist, traditional craftworker, and curator based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary, Alberta). She explores Indigenous themes from a contemporary perspective through painting, digital art, and photography. Her painting and digital art is primarily focused on the heavily symbolic Woodland Style of Indigenous art, while her photographic practice is used as a form of activism to highlight Indigenous issues. Her curatorial work focuses on elevating the voices of Indigenous creatives through a series of Indigenous focused exhibitions. She has an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Manitoba (2017), a B.Sc. in Archaeology, and a B.A. in Greek and Roman Studies (2011).

Description/Inspiration:

"MMIW, Strength in Unity," is one of many photographs from the "Art Heals: The Jingle Dress Project" series. This photograph was captured the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, native land of the Shoshone, Bannock, Gros Ventre, and Nez Perce people.

This project originated from a dream Eugene Tapahe had. It was to unite the beauty of the land and healing power of the jingle dress dance. In order to bring hope, unity, and healing during these uncertain times due to social differences and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The jingle dress dance originated during the Spanish influenza of 1918-19. It came as a dream to an Ojibwe father whose daughter was sick with the virus. His dream revealed the new dress and dance that had the power to heal. When the dresses were made, they were given to four women to perform the dance. When the little girl heard the sound of the jingles, she became stronger. By the end of the night she was dancing too.

Tapahe's desire is to take the healing power of the jingle dress to the land and document the spiritual places where our ancestors once walked. This past year of the pandemic he and his family have traveled across America, from the west to the east coast to capture a series of photographs to document, bless and reclaim the land of our ancestors.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Navajo designer & Photographer, Eugene specializes in capturing the beautiful landscape and people of the Southwest. He receives inspiration from his grandmother, family, and culture. During Eugene's first years of life, he and his grandmother lived off the land and practiced the traditional ways of their ancestors - the true balance and harmony of Mother Earth and man.

As Tapahe grew in his profession of the graphic arts and design world, he always heard that inner-voice telling him that someday he will share another unique gift with others.

Later, in his first career choice he became overwhelmed by the influences of the modern world. He made life-changing adjustments to recreate his own balance and harmony in his new environment. Tapahe recently expressed his reverence for his new pursuit in photography , "I have always loved photography, from the first time I picked up a camera. I knew I had a gift for telling stories through my images."

Tapahe has a deep desire to improve his work and displays an ethic that is admirable. He hopes you will appreciate his images and stories they tell as he continues his creative journey.

The Silent Epidemic is Photographic/ Research work based on the growing epidemic that is affecting our Indigenous Nations around The United States, Canada, Mexico and around the World. According to the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI.Org) in 2016 there has been a total of 5,712 cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and girls that have been reported. Due to the Urban Indian Health Institute's limited resources and poor data collection by numerous cities and the cases identified in this report are likely an undercount of MMIWG in Urban areas. My work is based on Awareness and a visual look into this epidemic but also questioning the Government on why these issues are not being reported in the media and why data is so limited. I have also incorporated work on the Boarding School Epidemic that has just been exposed in our Nation of the mistreatments in our Boarding School history Since it is Connected to MMIWR and the generational trauma that has been plaguing our Native Nations for Centuries this is the work I have created.

My name is Augustine Lopez I am a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Tucson, Az. I born and raised here in Tucson a small pueblo called Old Pascua Village and later I moved to New Pascua when I was 12 years old as a Foster child. I grew in the foster care system but all along I wanted to be better for myself and Family and be a role for my people. as an Adult I joined the United States Army as a reservist and during that time I was a Police Dispatcher, Police Dispatch Supervisor and became a Police Officer for the Tohono O'odham Nation and The Pascua Yaqui Nation. In 2004 I decided to leave Police work and I joined the Army as an Active Duty Soldier and was deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005 and 2007-2008 as a Sgt. in Gun Trucks conducting Convoy Security. in 2010 I was Retired Medically, and I decide to go back to school 2016. Now am a Senior at The University of Arizona and in the past two years I have been working on Indigenous issues such The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Epidemic and also with Combat P.T.S.D and Border issues. My goal is to complete my BFA degree in Studio Arts and American Indian Studies. I would love to be an advocate for all Nations and my People as an Artist it is my intention to continue my work on a National level and maybe at a Global level. I feel that I can make a difference in my People and Nation.

"The Silent Epidemic"

The Silent Epidemic is Photographic/ Research work based on the growing epidemic that is affecting our Indigenous Nations around The United States, Canada, Mexico and around the World. According to the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI.Org) in 2016 there has been a total of 5,712 cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and girls that have been reported. Due to the Urban Indian Health Institute's limited resources and poor data collection by numerous cities and the cases identified in this report are likely an undercount of MMIWG in Urban areas. My work is based on Awareness and a visual look into this epidemic but also questioning the Government on why these issues are not being reported in the media and why data is so limited. I have also incorporated work on the Boarding School Epidemic that has just been exposed in our Nation of the mistreatments in our Boarding School history Since it is Connected to MMIWR and the generational trauma that has been plaguing our Native Nations for Centuries this is the work I have created.
