My daughter Lakota Skye was born premature at 34 weeks and she was an En Caul Birth. On the morning of her birth I witnessed the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen in North Dakota, my homelands. It was that particular sunrise that inspired the current Sky Collection. That February the circle of life came full circle in 4 days. Although I was over 1700 miles from our current home in New York, without my husband or other children, I had my ina' (mom) next to me. Our family had just lost Auntie Tracey Many wounds. Tracey was a master bead worker and her designs were unmatched. She was a second mother to me. I am here today, thankful for our time together and all the teachings she handed down to me including beadwork which is seen throughout my collection. The birth of Lakota Skye gave me so much strength to continue curating my dreams.I hope my story will encourage those faced with pain of losing a loved one and can also be inspired by their own strength. I am currently still breastfeeding Lakota and she continues to strengthen me in my journey. We have many upcoming shows including London, Paris and Nigeria for 2023! Keep a look out for us!

What separates Kayla Lookinghorse from other designers is her hunkpapa/Itazipco Lakota heritage and the way it is artfully woven into her designs. K. Description/Inspiration:

As a teenager, I hitchhiked across Canada alone. But for the grace of Creator, I could very well have been one of the missing or murdered. The FORGET US NOT Collection was inspired by the on-going tragedy of Missing and Murdered Women and how I escaped being counted amongst them. The poem was written first and inspired me to continue with the faceless dolls. The symbolism of the dolls is, though they are from three (3) different nations, they are holding hands representing sisters, who, despite their differences in customs, traditions, and geographical locations, stand together--united. Each 'sister' wears a forget-me-not flower either on her moccasins, belt, or necklace. The hands across their mouths symbolize no longer having a voice and the desperate need for us to be their voice-for us to forget them not-for all indigenous nations to stand together as one family to protect our SISTERS. The beadwork for the forget-me-not flowers was done entirely in my Signature modified Square stitch and is guaranteed from ever falling apart through normal wear and tear. Each bead, added one at a time, is individually sewn to each of the surrounding beads using only 100% silk thread. Using this stitch, each bead ends up with between 6 and 9 strands of thread through it. Durable and strong!

I've worked with such mediums as pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels and paints. Born for the Odawa Nation and originating from an ancestral home renowned world-wide for its beautiful beadwork and artistry, mid-way through life and working under my Odawa name of Waawaaskonenhens (Little Flower), I chose to put down my pencils and brushes to pick up a beading needle. Beading is my life's passion and picking up that needle is like opening the door into my own little world. Working in the strongest stitch possible and creating pieces that fuel the imagination bonds together intense pride in art and heritage. By modifying the strongest of all stitches, the traditional Square Stitch, to double its strength, using only 100% silk thread and natural beeswax, the result is a piece of work that will last for many generations. It is true that my first love and specialty is beading. The freedom to lay down the beading needle and pick up a file for smoothing and sizing bone and horn, or a glovers needle for sewing hide. The freedom to bring ancestral work into the future by way of contemporary designs while maintaining the quality of the traditional. With the exception of the synthetic sinew used for stringing or sewing, the traditionalist in me insists on using all natural materials while the creative individualist side of me feels the need to expand on the traditional ? the need to step outside the box ? the need to be "different". I hope I have succeeded! It is my prayer that the resulting works signify honor and respect to the ancestors in every piece.

The wolf is a symbol of loyalty, strong family ties, excellent communication, education, understanding, and intelligence. The wolf is also known to some, including myself, as a messenger from Creator. During my travels over the years, wolves have shown themselves to me to warn of dangers ahead. It is both to show my gratitude and to honor, not only Creator but also His messenger that inspired the creation of this bag. With gold, copper, pink and yellow tones, this piece is larger than most of Otsí:tsi'designs florals. It has gold findings and 14k gold hooks; backed with deer hide. Rebecca Doxtator (she/ they) is from the Oneida Nation of the Thames community and the artist behind Otsí:tsi'designs. I made this piece using materials passed down from my grandmother. Leather weaving to represent the leather work and basket making she used to do. The flowers to represent her beautiful flower garden. The Deer Antler was gifted to me, i wanted to incorporate it because she ran a "hats for hides". This decorative wall hanger will add beauty to any space. "Akhsótha Akò there ne Yetsi'tsyaráhkwa" is Mohawk meaning "My Grandmother's Flowerbasket".

Artist Bio/Statement:

I am the artist behind Three Sisters Designs. My Kanien'kéha name is Karennotakies, which means she is singing around. I am Mohawk turtle clan of Akwesasne. I like using the traditional Hadenosaunee style of raised beadwork. I incorporate natural materials such as leather and wampum as seen in my work. I learned the same way many artist have, at Totas table. My grandma Donna Benedict taught me how to bead, sew, and work with leather. I've be creating since I was 15, going on 13 years all together. I started my business after my grandmother passed away about 4 years ago. She was the driving force behind Three Sisters Designs. Through creating its help me grieve and heal living without her, and I can only strive to as good of an artist as she was. A lot of my inspiration comes from my family, I have a beautiful son and daughter. I also find a lot of inspiration while being a language student and learning more of our history. I love looking at beadwork from the 1800-1900's there so much beauty in our history and language. As I'm working on the piece for the Peace Love Art: Indigenous Collective I'm using techniques my grandmother taught me and techniques that I have learned myself and merging the two together. Im calling the piece "Tota's basket" Tota being the Mohawk term for grandparent. My grandma was also a basket maker so this piece is 100% inspired by her and the teachings she has taught me, in beadwork and life. Description/Inspiration:

My work tends to be very utilitarian in nature. I strive to create pieces that exemplify and honour the long standing tradition of Iroquois beadwork. I am very particular and pay close attention to my finishing detail. I am industriousness a trait that I believe inherited from my maternal grandmother. I have been fortunate to learn the Kanien'keha raised beadwork style and my work tends to follow suit, mainly floral in design. The majority of my beadwork revolves around the many different colours that can be found from nature, however some of my more recent has focused on the monochromatic colour palette. This beaded purse entitled "Simply Elegant" encompasses the elements mentioned above. The ivory coloured florals are accented by earthy browns and hints 24kt gold beads. The handle is sturdy as is the tanned and smoked deer hide that gives this piece it's durability. The cotton calico gives that added contrast that is needed to complete this piece.

Artist Bio:

Leith Mahkewa is a member of the Oneida First Nation of the Thames. She currently lives in the Kanien'kahá:ka (Mohawk) community of Kahnawake with her husband and four children. She has been elevating her artistry for the past 18 years. She tends to create pieces mainly in the Iroquois raised beadwork style and is moving towards incorporating more Hopi/Tewa imagery into her creatiosn to honour her father and his family. In the past 9 years she has been awarded ribbons at both: the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market (2013, 2014, 2020), the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market (2014, 2019, 2020 & 2022) and the Ganondagan Hodinosoh:ni'Art Show 2020. She has exhibited at the Kanien'kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language & Cultural Center (Kahnawake, QC) and the Woodland Cultural Center (Brantford, ON). Her work is part of the collections of the Hood Museum (Hanover NH) and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, KS). Leith believes that bead work transcends the generations. Lynn Traylor is the artist and creator of Auntie Creations- "Creatine Generational Art for All". Lynn Traylor is Diné. She is Hastlishnii born for Tááchiinii. her Cheiis' are Tlaaschií and her Nali is Tlaaschii. She is originally from Black House Mesa. New Mexico and resides in the Phoenix area.

An indigenous artist who specializes in wearable art beadwork, Lynn learned to bead at a young age through her father. He taught her how to loom and peyote stitch. Over time, she began to flat bead and uses beading as a creative outlet to escape the everyday stresses of working in criminal prosecution for domestic violence cases.

As a child I lived in Peru with my family. My home was in the district of San Isidro, Lima, Peru. Behind my home was a beautiful park named Parque de Olivares. In English that translates to Olive Tree Park. I used to go there daily with my sister and play and climb the olives trees that covered the whole park. It is one of my first and most memorable memories. I think because of how beautiful it is, and how much fun I had playing there, it's stuck in my head like it was just yesterday to this day. These moccasins have beaded olive tree branches, and the vamp is a deep green to represent the luscious greenery of the park.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Hello everyone, my name is Natalie, and I am a Toronto based artist. I focus my art on making handmade jewelry (Traditional and non- traditional), moccasins, dream catchers and other leather work. My work comes from inspiration I find in my heart, culture and experiences. I am of Indigenous Canadian (Ojibwe) and Peruvian background. A lot of my work will show or have meaning connected to my backgrounds. I learned how to bead, and hand make moccasins through traditional teachings. Those teachings I carry with me and continue to practice through my art. The jewelry and moccasins I make, are all made to be worn by anyone who appreciates them.

Description/Inspiration:

Beadsoup means different things to different tribes throughout Indian Country. To me it is a reflection of the resourcefulness that beadworkers exhibited within their craftsmanship. This case is a reflection of the past belief to utilize all of the beads and value them because one does not know when they will be able to afford or obtain beads. Floral work is incorporated into this concept to reflect the dominance of floral patterns within Salish and Crow tribal designs. It has a contemporary twist by emanating a functional phone case.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Salisha Old Bull was born in Eastern Montana and raised on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Western Montana. Her mother is Salish and father is Crow so she has a well rounded bundle of Indigenous teachings from the Montana area. She is married to Shandin Pete and has 5 children. She was an aspiring artist as a child but chose to follow a different career path. She kept art in the background of her life and expressed most of her creativity through beadwork. She was taught to bead by her maternal grandmother, Rachel Arlee Bowers when she was a very young child and considers her earliest memories of beading at about her second grade in elementary school. In addition, painting, photography, digital art, and drawing are other favorite mediums. She gains inspiration from traditional ecological knowledge from both Salish and Crow tribes and uses this imagery within her artwork. These aspects of cultural knowledge are the attributes that empower Indigenous people.

Description/Inspiration:

I thought about all the issues that are effecting our People and how hard it is to keep a good mind, staying strong and Sgë:nö' (Peace/Wellbeing in Seneca). I thought I could put all that in beadwork and on a hat. #EveryChildMatter, #MyBodyMyChoice, #LandBack, #MMIW are all issues that may be personal, hot button and tragic, but they affect everyone in a different manner and depth. Some are more affected than others, but we all carry pieces of these issues around with us. I wanted those visible but surrounded by the beauty of the floral beadwork, a visual representation of our culture and heritage. A foundation for grounding us as we maneuver forward through the pain and healing of these issues. Often times I add pollinators to my work, this hat being no exception. As a gardener, I see the value and role the pollinators play in growing our food. Having that connection to the land is just as important in keeping our mind and body strong so we can be healthy humans. All these things swirling on the surface, pinging us from the outside, we need to remember to keep a good mind, stay peaceful, centered, well... Sgë:nö', which is why under the brim, just above the eyes, I beaded for the wearer to see, in white (for peace), Sgë:nö'. So whoever wears the hat can keep that peace going forward wherever their path shall lead.

Artist Bio:

Samantha Jacobs is a Seneca artist of the Turtle clan from the Cattaraugus Territory. As a child, she learned beadwork from her mother Mary Jacobs. Samantha is known for her beaded moccasins and also does quillwork, moose & caribou hair tufting. She is a member of the Native Roots Artists Guild. Samantha works on her home territory where she shares her knowledge as a community educator.

Artist Statement:

Samantha Jacobs is a full-time artist working in diverse arts including beadwork, tufting, traditional clothing & jewelry. She works on her pieces because she finds it relaxing and enjoys the process of creating. Whether she is working with beads or making a mess with corn husk or moose hair, her art is free form and each piece is organic in its growth. Samantha makes art as a way to reflect the world around her in a self expressive visually appealing way. No matter what the subject of a piece deals with, whether it's a random flower or a leaf that caught her eye, or a particularly interesting story she heard along her travels; the completed work is always about telling a story. Stella Nall is a multimedia artist and poet from Bozeman, and a First Descendant of the Apsáalooke Tribe. She graduated from the University of Montana in 2020 with a BFA in Printmaking, a BA in Psychology and a minor in Art History and Criticism. She now lives and works in Missoula, where she is represented by Radius Gallery. Her work lives in murals across Montana, as well as in numerous public and private collections, including The Montana Museum of Art and Culture, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum of Contemporary Native Arts.

Artist Statement:

As an artist I am driven by three primary forces: to process my experiences, to connect with others, and to advocate for change. I love to use vibrant colors to illustrate whimsical, sweet, imaginary creatures which tell a story. Some of the imagery that I use is drawn from tradition, and some I developed to speak to my own experiences. I utilize imagined creatures to discuss a wide variety of topics including love, grief, joy and identity.

I am Apsáalooke, and as a child my mother first exposed me to art through her beadwork. The stitches, palettes and patterns she used, as well as those of our tribe, still influence my work today. Media is an important aspect of my work. I combine beadwork with other two dimensional forms of art making such as printmaking, painting, and illustration with the intention of challenging existing stereotypes and expectations viewers may hold about what Indigenous art should look like.

Growing up my great grandmother never allowed us to claim our heritage. Later in life I realized that boarding schools were taking kids until 1996. We knew about our background though through both of my grandmothers. I danced at Powwows since I was 14 and had my coming out ceremony in 2019. I danced until my back injury affected my balance and recently diagnosed with Lupus. I've been doing more artwork and beadwork as my medicine. It helps me feel more productive.

I am the daughter of Q w ikilag (meaning high standing in the Bighouse, given to her from James Charles King on behalf of Sarah Ester Johnson, Nelson), Therise Leroux, Johnson, Blomberg and Clifford Blomberg. I am the granddaughter of Irene Blomberg, Marie Bear and Arthur Blomberg. I am Woodland Bear Néhiyaw (Cree) and Norwegian Sweden Jewish from my father and French and Scottish from my spirit mother. I am a first generation residential school survivor.

I also walk with teachings gifted from my Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis brother, ?i?alqumlilas (meaning Welcoming face, given to him by James Charles King aka Jimmy King) Glen Johnson from Gilford Island.

I make these earrings in honour of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirited. I do not sell these pieces, they are gifts meant to keep this issue in our collective minds in hopes that strides can be made to keep our women, girls and 2 spirited people safe.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Danielle Swift's work explores the human body and communicates the dichotomy of our natural environment and human constructs, creation and destruction, and the fragility and strength represented in both the delicate and resilient mix of materials (wood, dirt, beeswax, paper, jute, copper, bronze, plaster, concrete, resin, etc), which makes the observer feel the duality of an emotional and cerebral connection. Having established an affinity for concrete as her main medium, Swift's drawn to how the material can be innovatively manipulated in a way that works aesthetically and is uniquely individual.

Swift's sculptures have appeared in numerous local exhibits, most notably, ART Vancouver art fair; East Vancouver's HFA Contemporary gallery, Deconstruction and the Space Between; Granville Island's Becker Galleries; Vancouver's Windsor Gallery, and The ACT Art Gallery in Maple Ridge. The brand for this hat is Nu Trendz and the design inspiration was drawn from the hat itself. This was made with size 11 Japanese seed beads and size 13 permanent gold seed beads. The intricate designs and addition of the gold beads make this hat stylish and "extra". This made me think of the catchy song "Boujee Natives" by the Snotty Nose Rez Kids. This is a one size 100% cotton hat with adjustable snaps in the back.
