Artist Bio/Statement:

My name is Alicia Hitchings and I'm an enrolled member of the Passamaquoddy tribe in Indian township Maine. I self taught beading and using quills in my necklaces and bracelets while in high school. In the 90's there wasn't much I could do with my art, so I stopped in college. After a traumatic event in my life a few years ago, I picked back up my beads and quills as a form of healing. I added in sweetgrass, not only is it amazing medicine, but as a connection to my grandmother since she braided for the basket makers back in the day. I love thinking of her and feeling her next to me every time I make tiny braids and I add them as a finishing touch to all my earrings. I reside in WV with 6 kids with beading as my main "job" and children's photography on the side.
