Artist Bio/Statement:

Sammy is of Pascua Yaqui, Purépecha, German, and Sicilian lineage. She is the founder of Simply Art by Sammy, established in 2020. Born and raised in San Diego, California she first began her art journey when she was a young child but as she grew, so did her artwork along with the meaning behind it. A large focal point with her paintings is the sky, primarily sunrises and sunsets, and the surrounding landscapes. She is drawn to the sky because each morning and evening, the colors are never the same. She paints these sceneries as a reminder to us all to take a moment in our lives to observe the beauty that surrounds us, and to strive to protect and heal our Earth. She is primarily a self-taught artist, but as an adult she studied different mediums of art from photography, drawing, painting, and graphic design. Her objective is to provide affordable art to the community for people's cultural enjoyment and enhancement. Ultimately, her purpose is to create art that exemplifies the beauty of Mother Nature, Indigenous territory, and the mind, body, and spirit. Currently, some of her paintings are displayed at UC San Diego's Intertribal Resource Center.
