My daughter Lakota Skye was born premature at 34 weeks and she was an En Caul Birth. On the morning of her birth I witnessed the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen in North Dakota, my homelands. It was that particular sunrise that inspired the current Sky Collection. That February the circle of life came full circle in 4 days. Although I was over 1700 miles from our current home in New York, without my husband or other children, I had my ina' (mom) next to me. Our family had just lost Auntie Tracey Many wounds. Tracey was a master bead worker and her designs were unmatched. She was a second mother to me. I am here today, thankful for our time together and all the teachings she handed down to me including beadwork which is seen throughout my collection. The birth of Lakota Skye gave me so much strength to continue curating my dreams.I hope my story will encourage those faced with pain of losing a loved one and can also be inspired by their own strength. I am currently still breastfeeding Lakota and she continues to strengthen me in my journey. We have many upcoming shows including London, Paris and Nigeria for 2023! Keep a look out for us!

Lookinghorse is a contemporary brand that honors the designer's heritage with an aesthetic specific to her tiospaye' (family). Her signature symbols, three lines Horizontal pays homage to the past, present and future. As a mother, designer, artist, and tribal citizen, Kayla Lookinghorse has forged her own path by creating and recreating traditional garments with a contemporary edge.
