Artist Bio/Statement:

I am Jimmy Dean Horn jr, a Chickasaw artist. I draw, paint, print and create in just about anyway I can. My recent series "The One That Sits Above" explores what it means to be a white passing Native American in a society built on entitlement, bent on destroying itself and everything with it. I grew up in a military family detached from the culture, the past decade I have been learning and unlearning as I explore a culture I was denied. Each of the pieces within this series (20 in total, 10 fullsize 27x50", 10 portrait 18x24") touches on a different part of that narrative.
My process is a nontraditional form of printmaking. My intaglio plates are etched on scrap plexiglas sourced from a local frame trashcan, my block prints are on lino, gym mats, and even traffic cones. I do this in hopes to keep my carbon foot print low while I explore off the beaten path. My pieces are all printed by hand, I do not use a press. Each piece is a one off print, I use printmaking a the medium to create art not as a tool for mass production of works. The elements used with the pieces are often times repeated in various pieces, but used in a way that changes the meaning of that element. ie, the flaming world can be just that in one piece, while the next it is a warbonnet. This is achieved by cropping, color, or placement.
